Water Police Site park named Pirrima Park at official opening

It rolls off the tounge for locals but the awkward sounding "Water Police Site Park" now has a real name!  On Saturday, March 13, the eight year struggle to retain foreshore land along the Pyrmont headland in public ownership came to a fitting end with the official opening of Pirrima Park.

The efforts of resident group Friends of Pyrmont Point (FOPP) and its founding president, Marcelle Hoff, were acknowledged during the ceremony and key supporters Jack Mundey and the CFMEU were invited to speak.

In 2003 the CFMEU placed a green ban on the site and were instrumental in delaying the sale of the site long enough for the newly elected City Council, of which Ms Hoff became a member, to offer to purchase the site.

The City of Sydney undertook extensive community consultation during the planning of the park resulting in the inclusion of a sheltered bay with access to the water and many other unique ammenities.  The final design has won many awards and the park itself has been popular with locals and visitors from the day it opened.
