Water Police Site park celebrated by campaigners
The new park at the former Water Police site is proving to be a hit with both local and wider Sydney communities as the park design is put through its paces by users. In marked contrast to the existing park nearby the new park offers a variety of experiences and is proving to be a people magnet for young and old. Children are especially catered for by a playground that fulfils the expectations of the original design by providing a range of challenges and experiences that keep the little ones busily entertained as they dodge water jets, climb, slide, play in the sand, swing and wander through the different stuctural elements of the playground.
But for the well organised campaign by Friend of Pyrmont Point and the support of two successive Sydney Councils led by Lord Mayors Lucy Turnbull and Clover Moore and the CFMEU which placed a green ban on construction, the Water Police site would now feature five apartment blocks up to 14 stories high.
Many of the original Friends of Pyrmont Point campaigners gathered at the park today along with hundreds of park users to celebrate the new park and enjoy the ambience of a park that is set to be one of the jewels of Sydney Harbour.
